McDaniel College

Westminster, MD
McDaniel College is a private four-year liberal arts school 30 miles from Baltimore and an hour from Washington, D.C. Founded just after the Civil War as the first coeducational college south of the Mason-Dixon Line, McDaniel today has about 1,600 undergraduates and a similar number of graduate students. The McDaniel Plan, a phrase used to describe the school's brand of academics, emphasizes a combination of broad liberal arts and deep subject specialization. Undergrads can choose from about 30 majors and 50 minors, among which the most popular programs are biology, psychology, and business management. McDaniel is among the schools featured in the popular book Colleges That Change Lives, which called it, "a community of nice, earnest, unassuming, quietly self-assured teenagers who realize they are getting a first-rate education and who regard their teachers as their friends and mentors." It also has a sister campus, McDaniel-Europe, in Budapest, Hungary, where students can study for a semester or even their entire four years. About 90 student organizations dominate student life on campus, with options including 10 Greek organizations, two choirs, a jazz ensemble, a literary magazine, and a newspaper.
