California State University, Northridge is known for being a rather large but fairly diverse community situated in the heart of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. The most popular majors among the school's roughly 35,000 undergrads are psychology, business administration and management, and sociology, but the university offers more than 60 majors. Prominent graduates from the university include singer-songwriter Paula Abdul, actor Morris Chestnut, and model Eva Mendes. About half of the applicants who apply are accepted into Cal State, Northridge. And about 75% of students receive grants or scholarships to make the school more affordable. Like many CSU universities, the Northridge campus admits a large share of students from low-income backgrounds and helps an impressive 36% of its graduates reach the top 20% of earners, according to The New York Times. Within three years of graduation, alumni take in a median income of $47,900, which is 7% higher than students at comparable schools. Sports aren't really a huge part of campus life at Cal State, Northridge, but CSUN fields 18 athletics teams at the NCAA Division I level. CSUN dropped its football program due to budget cuts, but the university is one of about 50 schools in the nation with a Division I beach volleyball program.
